All Star – Advice
Within 4 hours I felt a slight pain in my left foot. Writing this off as new shoe discomfort I persevered until the end of the day by which point I had to take them off and hobble around in my socks.
By the following day my big toe was twice its normal size and a pretty shade of purple. Unable to put any weight on my foot I spent the weekend taking pain killers / anti-inflammatory. Several ice packs later I could barely move my foot. The whole weekend was a washout with me on the couch – leg elevated.
Critical time at work so having to return to the office on Monday I found the most comfortable pair of shoes I could and did my best to hop about. More pain killers, more ice and lots of grimacing later the week had passed with little improvement. Each evening was – couch and foot up.
With no obvious signs of a break in the skin I self diagnosed bunions, gout or turf toe (the internet can be a dangerous thing). I’m not a hypochondriac, haven’t visited the doctor in 10 years but I was now getting paranoid (remember Bob Marley’s first symptoms). By Sunday 17th June the pain was unbearable and I was forced to go to the local walk-in Hospital (oh the irony). Had to wait around a bit but have to say these NHS guys do an amazing job. I was diagnosed with an infection in the joint of my big toe probably caused friction. Sent on my way with what can only be described as a crate of antibiotics, I was reassured and feeling a bit stupid (wearing a white socks and sandals).
3 days into the course of medication and 2 days off work later I am a whole lot better and can just about put weight on my foot.
The romance with Converse is over and the ashes could not even be rekindled with a new line bearing my name.
Moral of this tale –
Take time off work when you are injured or sick.
Take the advice of those who love and care for you.
Visit your doctor when you need to. It is not manly to stay away it is just stupid.
Do not self-diagnose using the internet as reference.
